Indeed, Chilean Copper Commission projections indicate that mining investments for 2007-2011 represent US$ 22 billion dollars, which will permit increasing copper production from 5,560,000 tons of fine copper in 2007 to 6,700,000 tons in 2015. Ever since colonial times, mining in Chile has been a great source of funds.
Chile’s copper mining project pipeline remains attractive but both reductions in prices and ore grades place high demands on process efficiency. Also, operational costs need to include the cost of adopting technologies necessary to produce what has been termed “green copper “, i.e., copper produced in which the environment and the local communities are an integral part of the project.
The main source of copper produced by KGHM are mines solely owned by the company. The exception is Sierra Gorda mine in Chile, which is now at the commissioning stage, where KGHM owns 55% of shares. The remaining mines are located in Poland (Lubin, Rudna, Polkowice-Sieroszowice), Chile (Franke, Sierra Gorda), Canada (McCreedy, Morrison) and the USA (Carlota, Robinson).
Oxide plant. The copper oxide ores are leached in at the Oxide Plant located 50 km southeast from Taltal city. This plant has recently started production to produce 5000 t/year of copper with a processing capacity of 50,000 t/year of ore. The copper oxide ore is supplied from the altered zones of Las Luces, Altamira, Doña Elba and Filomena mines.
Collahuasi, Chile. Collahuasi copper mine 180km south-east of the port of Iquique in northern Chile ranks as the third largest copper mine in the world. Proven and probable copper reserves of the open-pit mine as of December 2012 stood at 25.895Mt. The mine produced 282,096t of copper in 2012, accounting for 5.1% of Chile’s total copper output.

In Chile, we have launched a pilot photovoltaic plant that has been built over a tailings pond – the first of its kind in the world. The initiative consists of 256 photovoltaic panels (330 watts each) installed on Las Tórtolas pond at Los Bronces copper mine, with the capacity to generate 86 kW.
The gradual fall of ore grades (which is the quality of copper in the rock) also leads to a greater use of water to extract copper. As such, water consumption is expected to increase 4.2% per year towards the year 2029. To learn more about mining investment opportunities in Chile, take a look at the following article. Source: AFP
